Lay Summary

John Wilson is Professor of Human Factors in the School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering. He was founder and first Director of the University’s Institute for Occupational Ergonomics (http://www.ioe.nottingham.ac.uk) and the Virtual Reality Applications Research Team (VIRART) (http://www.VIRART.nottingham.ac.uk), and co-founder of the University of Nottingham Mixed Reality Laboratory (http://www.mrl.nottingham.ac.uk). Earlier appointments were at Loughborough University, Birmingham University, UC Berkeley and University of New South Wales. He is a Chartered Psychologist and a Chartered Engineer, and Fellow of the Ergonomics Society (http://www.ergonomics.org.uk), and of the British Psychological Society, the Human Factors Society and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Professor Wilson researches and consults in all areas of human factors, with particular interests in socio-technical systems, human-centred design, collaborative work, virtual environments, participative ergonomics and rail human factors. He has authored 500 publications with over 250 in refereed books, journals or conferences. He is Editor-in-Chief of Applied Ergonomics. In 1995 he was awarded the Sir Frederic Bartlett Medal of the Ergonomics Society, and in 2007 the President's Medal as part of the Network Rail Ergonomics Team. He is external assessor for a number of commercial and research organisations; in particular being part-time Human Factors Strategic Co-ordinator for Network Rail.
