Follow up study

Would you like to participate in a longitudinal diary-based study examining navigation system usage and behaviour over a 1-2 month period ?

Few longitudinal studies of navigation system users have ever been conducted. A longitudinal study (over a period of 1-2 months) could provide valuable insight into changes in navigation system user behaviour over time, particularly when linked to other factors such as general driving behaviour, demographics and a range of relevant Psychological and behavioural characteristics. For example, the behaviour of novice navigation system users may gradually change as they gain more system experience, or are exposed to more diverse driving situations. Trust in system advice may vary based on the reliability of route guidance instructions in familiar and unfamiliar areas.

By taking part in this study, you would be making a further valuable contribution to research and understanding in this area, and to the driving behaviour literature. The findings could inform future navigation system design, safety, efficiency and functionality.

Currently this study is still in the preliminary design stage. It is envisaged that following recruitment, participants will initially be given a range of short psychometric tests to complete. These will assess Psychological and behavioural attributes of interest. Following this they will be emailed a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet (or something similar depending on the software available to participants).

This spreadsheet will include a number of preset questions and scales relating to navigation system usage and driving behaviour patterns. Participants will also be given the opportunity to write short statements in a free recall exercise related to a number of pertinent topics should they wish.

Participants will be asked to answer these questions two or three times a week for a period of 1-2 months, recording their responses on the spreadsheet. Each session will take no longer than 5 minutes. Participants will be asked to email their completed responses to the experimenter at the end of each week.

Some form of monetary reward will be offered to participants as an incentive for completing the study. Payment will be awarded after the final submission is made. The size of this incentive is presently unclear, as it will depend on the number of potential participants who show interest in this study. It is envisaged that the study will take place between March and May 2007.

If you use an in-vehicle navigation system and would like to participate in this innovative further research, please send an email to the following address:

In the subject field of the email please write “Diary study participant”. I hope you found the preceding results pages interesting and informative, and I hope to hear from some of you again in the near future regarding this diary study. If you do not wish to take part in this further research, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for your contribution to the questionnaire study.

Yours
